Mounting the bit conductor between the sense conductor and word conductor over a magnetic film storage element provides good shielding between word and sense conductors as well as a word conductor of low characteristic impedance.

It is desirable to mount word conductor 1 directly over magnetic films 2 and 3 in close proximity to ground plane 4 to maintain a low characteristic impedance by minimizing inductance about conductor 1. This low characteristic impedance minimizes the voltage developed when word current is forced into conductor 1. Bit conductors 5 and 6 are mounted at right angles to conductor 1 over respective films 2 and 3. Such provide selective magnetic fields in the desired bit direction during the write cycle. Sense conductors 7 and 8 are shielded from conductor 1 by the presence respectively of conductors 5 and 6.

Shielding between conductor 1 and conductors 7 and 8 is enhanced by the buildup of eddy currents in conductors 5 and 6 during energization of conductor I. These eddy currents do not significantly attenuate the coupled output signal of the films because of the flux patterns through films 2 and 3 and keeper 9. The magnetic film bit storage element, word conductor, bit conductor, sense conductor and keeper are stacked in the order listed.
