Impact printing, such as obtained by a typewriter, increases the conductivity of the paper in the areas of impact. This increase is due partly to the compression of the paper in these areas and partly to the ink or carbon absorbed by the paper. Further increase in conductivity can be achieved by including a conductive material in the ink.

Such typewritten paper, as well as other papers in which the print areas are more conductive or resistive than the background, can be electrostatically reproduced without the use of optics. Such a paper 1 is passed between conductive roller 2 and drum 3 having dielectric or photoconductive surface 4. A constant DC voltage of about 1000 V is applied across roller 2 and drum 3 by voltage source 5. A negative electrostatic charge pattern corresponding to the print areas is formed on drum surface 4. Alternately, the polarity of source 5 can be reversed and a positive charge formed on surface 4.

The electro-static image is developed with toner by either a cascade development device 6 or by a magnetic brush not shown. Using conductive roller 7, the toner image is transferred to ordinary paper and fixed. Instead of roller 7, a corona discharge unit or one of the other known toner transfer methods can be used.

The residual toner remaining on drum 3 is removed by cleaning brush 8. Any residual electrostatic charge is neutralized by uniformly charging drum 3 by corona discharge unit 9. Alternatively,...
