Abstract

This magnetic tape system uses wide head 10, upper drawing, which spans all tracks 12...17 on tape 24. Head 26 takes the composite signal from head 10 and records it onto tape 24 in reference track 28. Head 10 is then moved down the width of one track, lower drawing. Head 10 senses all tracks but track 12. Tape 24 is read again and the composite signal is compared against the output of head 26. The difference between these two outputs is then the signal of track 12. This process is repeated for the other tracks.
