Abstract

This magnetic tape system uses two multichannel heads 10 and 12. Each spans many tracks an tape 14. Head 10, however, spans one more track 16 than head 12. The outputs from heads 10 and 12 are compared and the difference is the signal from track 16. Heads 10 and 12 face each other on opposite sides of tape 14. The same information is recorded on both sides of tape 14 in same time, space, and phase relationships. Thus, each head read exactly the same bits regardless of tape speed variations, skew, etc.
