Abstract

In this reader for chadless tape 10, switch 22 operates only when sensing a down chad such as chad 12. Star wheel 14 is mounted to rotate on assembly 16. Assembly 16 is pivotally mounted on pivot 18 and is biased against tape 10 by tension spring 19. Arm 20 is also pivoted about pivot 18 and rests on the top of star wheel 14. Switch 22 is mounted on assembly 16 in a manner to be actuated by arm 20.

Star Wheel Chadless Tape Reader

In this reader for chadless tape 10, switch 22 operates only when sensing a down chad such as chad 12. Star wheel 14 is mounted to rotate on assembly

When an up chad such as chad 24 passes under star wheel 14, the latter rides up chad 24 causing the entire assembly 16 to pivot counterclockwise about pivot 18. There is therefore no relative movement between any of the elements mounted on assembly 16 and, therefore, switch 22 is not operated.

However, when a down chad, such as chad 12, passes under star wheel 14, the latter catches on the trailing edge of chad 12 causing wheel 14 to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. Since the distance between two peaks on star wheel 14 is greater than the distance between two valleys, the rotation of star wheel 14 rotates arm 20 in a counterclockwise direction about pivot 18, thus actuating switch 22.
