Tunnel Erase Magnetic Transducer

This is a magnetic head construction for read-write-erase operation with a single coil.

Core A consists of a stack of read-write laminations B flanked by spacer laminations of nonmagnetic material. On the outer sides of the spacer laminations are composite erase laminations C. These are made up of a magnetic leading leg and a nonmagnetic trailing leg. A gap is formed in all the laminations. A read-write coil is placed on the leading leg of the stack. A nonmagnetic shim is inserted in the gap.

The magnetic flux generated in the leading leg by the single coil is divided into three paths. The majority of the flux traverses the gap in the read-write laminations and produces longitudinal recording. The remainder of the flux in the outer laminations traverses the spacer laminations in a transverse direction. This transverse flux provides a transverse erasure of the fringing flux of the read-write gap during write operations.
