Abstract

Circulating cutting knives running against a groove are utilized to slit a web into tapes. Ultrasound activation of the groove spindle or knife spindle produces an apparatus which is self-cleaning and in which there is self-sharpening of the knife. Additionally, the use of ultrasound during slitting causes vibrations. These reduce the physical properties of the web being slit and allow it to be cut more easily without feathering or tearing of the edges.
