This actuator, an electromagnetic system, provides translational stepping motions along one axis.

The actuator comprises threaded shaft S of magnetic material. Shaft S is supported between two bearings, not shown, and is surrounded by three identical solenoids 1. Coils X, Y, and Z are wound on solenoids 1. Inner diameter 2 of solenoids 1 and circumference 3 of shaft S are cut with a continuous helical thread as in drawings A, B, and C. These solenoids 1 are positioned on shaft S so that, at any rest position of shaft S, the teeth of shaft S are directly in line with those of one solenoid as in drawing A. The teeth of S are slightly displaced with respect to the teeth of the other two solenoids as in drawings B and C. The teeth of these latter two solenoids are oppositely displaced with respect to the teeth of shaft S.

To move shaft S one position to the left, a voltage pulse is applied to coil Y. This attracts the mating teeth of shaft S to a position similar to that shown in A. To move shaft S one position to the right, a voltage pulse is applied to coil Z. Consequently, shaft S can be moved either left or right by applying a voltage pulse to the properly displaced solenoid.
