Abstract

This document handling machine has more than one document stacker. As many as two documents are permitted in the transport section. It is required that the proper document be directed into the correct stacker. Devices for detecting and indicating the failure to accomplish this are needed. Documents 10 are fed in seriatim, relative to read head 15. Documents 10 are then directed into one of two stackers 20 or 25 through the facility of stacker selector 30. Document sensor 35 detects when 10 comes under reading head 15. When the trailing edge of 10 clears 35, trigger 42 is set. For the first document through the machine, a signal from document sensor 40 is not present. Hence, input conditions to And 50 are satisfied so that latch 52 is set.

Since a document 10 is read by the time its trailing edge passes from under 35, a decision can be made with regard to which stacker should receive the document. This decision must be made by the time the leading edge of the document is sensed by 40. Normally, documents 10 are entered into stacker 20 unless a select signal is passed by And 49 to operate selector 30.

The select signal is applied to And's 46 and 47. These are conditioned by signals passed by Inverter 45 and Or 44, respectively. Or 44 has inputs connected to the set outputs of trigger 42 and latch 52.
