Dual Pitch Tab Rack

Single tab rack 1 provides tab stops located at character space increments. These are according to either of two pitches for use in machines having dual- pitch escapement.

Tab stops 2 are frictionally held on tab rack 1 for limited angular movement relative to it to permit positioning in either Set or Clear positions. Stops 2 include two diametrically opposed projections 3 and 4. There is one projection for each pitch. An additional single projection stop 5 is positioned at regular intervals to provide the additional stops required for the higher pitch, i.e., more characters per inch, rack.

In operation, sensing finger 6 strikes projections 3 of tab stop 2 which are set to terminate a tabulation operation. Conversion to higher pitch operation is accomplished by moving the tabulation control mechanism including finger 6 and set and clear mechanism, not shown, laterally clear of tap stops 2 and 5 and rotating, 180 degrees, the rack 1.
