This apparatus controls the movement of an element from one position to a desired position. The moveable element can be a machine tool table.

Light source 10 is attached to a stationary portion of table 12. Light source 14 is attached to moveable portion 16 of table 12. Two rotating cylinders 18 and 20 are attached to motor 22 which causes 18 and 20 to rotate. Slotted disk 24 is attached to the rotating assembly via shaft 26, Light source 28 is placed on one side of disk 24 opposite photocell 30. Photocell 32 is inside of cylinder 18 but does not rotate it. Another stationary photocell 34 is inside of cylinder 20 in line with light source 10.

Counter 36 counts pulses received from photocell 30. Position register 38 stores a binary number. This is a manifestation of the desired position d of table
16. Compare circuit 40 compares the contents of register 38 with the actual position of table 16 as indicated in counter 36.

If it is desired to move table 16 to a particular position, a binary manifestation of the desired position d is entered into register 38 via the desired position input line.

As cylinder assembly 42 rotates in the direction of the arrow, the actual position of table 16 is recorded as slot 42 passes between the line connecting light source 14 with photocell 32, energizing the latter. An output from photocell 32 turns on trigger 44, the output of which energizes And 46. The counter drive pulses from photocell 30, w...
