Carriage Return No Index Mechanism

Typist-operated mechanism which selectively prevents line indexing movement of a typewriter platen during carrier return operations is provided.

Prior to a carriage return operation, the typist moves lever 10 to the position represented by dotted lines. Movement of lever 10 rotates ring member 1 1 located at the end of typewriter platen 12. Extension 13 of ring 11 flexes flat return spring 14 and extension 15 engages stationary stop 16 to limit movement of ring 11. At the same time, pawl shield 17 carried by ring 11 is moved to its active position.

At the beginning of the carriage return operation, link 18 is pulled and indexing pawl 19 moves toward engagement with indexing ratchet 20. However, shield 17 is positioned to prevent pawl 19 from engaging ratchet 20 so that platen 12 is not rotated. After the carriage return operation is completed, the typist releases lever 10 and spring 14 returns the mechanism to its initial condition.
