Abstract

A three-dimensional furnace can be made employing graphite felt 2 as a heating element. Within felt 2 is slit 4 into which can be inserted objects 6 for heating. Electrodes 8 and 10 are applied to the end surfaces of felt 2. A suitable source of electrical energy 14 is applied to the electrodes. The furnace can be either used at normal atmospheric pressure or employed in a vacuum or with an inert gas. Felt 2 acts not only as a heating element but also as an insulating shell similar to a resistance muffle furnace. The interior portion of felt 2 conducts the majority of the current. The exterior portion insulates so as to avoid rapid loss of heat from the heating element. Such felt 2 units are, in general, more efficient than other type materials being used as heating elements in a furnace.
