Abstract

A transducer for a sonic delay line comprises a three-section coil to produce a sharp W-shaped pulse. Coil 10 has a center section of N turns wound in one direction and end sections of N/2 turns wound in the other direction, as indicated by current direction symbols 11. Coil 10 is disposed about delay medium 12 which can have the form either of a magnetostrictive wire or tape. Shielding 13 is provided at either end of the coil, and a bias magnetic field is created by permanent magnet 14. The three-sectioned coil 10 minimizes the electrical driving inductance and produces a sharp W-shaped pulse 15. In this manner, high-frequency operation of the delay line to about 4 to 5 megacycles is possible.
