Light Intensity Modulated Flying Spot Scanner Recorder

This is a graphic recorder utilizing a flexible metal strip to provide a flying spot scanner whose scanning rate is readily varied.

Metallic strip 11 with a light reflecting surface has one of its ends attached to an incremental step motor 13. The other end of strip 11 is attached to tortional damper 15. Periodically, motor 13 steps through a small angle for a short time duration and returns to its initial position. This generates a tortional wave on strip
11. The wave travels along the strip until it arrives at damper 15. The signal to be recorded modulates light source 17 which emits intensity-modulated light rays
19. The latter are channeled through light guide 21 to fall incident on strip 11 so that they are reflected by the traveling tortional wave onto recording paper 25. The periodic generation of the tortional wave on strip 11 results in successive scans of light across paper 25. The latter is advanced after each scan by paper advance stepping motor 23.

The scanning rate can be precisely controlled either by a variable frequency clock or by the initiation of the external event to be recorded. The speed of propagation of the wave along strip 11 is a function of the physical dimensions and properties of strip 11 and its tension. Varying speeds of propagation can be achieved by changing the tension of a strip 11 having fixed dimensions.
