Torque Limiter

Torque limiter 10 limits the torque applied from a driven input shaft 11 to output member 12. Such occurs when a load is suddenly applied to member 12.

Rigidly attached to input shaft 1 1 is cylindrical hub 13. Mounted on hub 13 is plate 14 which pivotally carries arm 15. The latter is biased counterclockwise by spring 16 and carries weight 17 and drag shoe 18 on its opposite ends. Helical clutch spring 19 is loosely received over hub 13 and is attached to member 12.

During normal operating conditions drag shoe 18 engages clutch spring 19 so member 12 is driven from shaft 11. Since weight 17 is disposed radially from shaft 11 and member 12 the torque limiting device is not sensitive to angular velocity but only to changes in angular velocity. When a sudden load is applied to member 12, the change in angular velocity causes arm 15 to pivot clockwise. Drag shoe 18 is removed from clutch spring 19 and slippage occurs between shaft 1 1 and member 12. The ranges of torque control are determined by selecting the proper inertia for arm 15 and the value of spring 16.
