Ferrite Recording Heads

To record information at high densities on magnetic media, ferrite recording heads are required with narrow track widths.

To realize a ferrite recording head 1 with a narrow track width section 2, a portion of material 3 is removed. The amount of material removable, to obtain a narrow track width dimension, is limited owing to the brittle nature of the ferrite material.

By applying a supporting layer of low melting glass 4, further reduction in track width dimension is achieved. With the glass 4 as a support about track section 2, it is possible to machine or lap face 5 of ferrite recording head 1 to provide further reduction in the track width dimension.
