The uniform and efficient system is for stimulating fluorescence in a transparent crystal, such as a laser crystal. This is by trapping the stimulating or pumping energy in the crystal after it has been introduced in it through a bundle of optical fibers.

Pumping energy 10 is directed from light source 12 into one end of optical fibers 14 for transmission through them to optically active material 16 to the surface of which the opposite ends of fibers 14 abut. The transverse cross- sectional area of each fiber 14 is small compared to that of material 16. Material 16 has dielectric coating or plastic cladding 18. This may be only several microns thick to minimize strain on the crystal and to insure continuous optical surfaces. Plastic 18 also serves to decrease the scattering of light particularly where the crystal sides are not highly polished and it inhibits side loss of the axial laser emission waves. Reflective coating 20 which can be a highly polished shell is disposed around material 16 and coating 18. The shell or coating 20 can be made of thermally conductive metal of any desired thickness to operate as a heat sink for material 16. Coating 20 has a longitudinally disposed slit through which the opposite end of the bundle of fibers, linearly aligned, passes.
