Abstract

This is for providing connections between external pins and conductive layers of a laminated printed circuit board. In A, laminated printed circuit board 2 has circuit conductors 6, 8, 10 and 12, held between MYLAR* circuit boards 4. On either side of laminated circuit board 2, a metal etch resist 5, e.g., KMER*, has been selectively deposited so as to mask all areas except where holes are desired. As shown in B, areas 14 and 16 are the only portions of the board which are not covered by resist 5. Inner conductors 6, 8 and 12 are shown in phantom as they appear at various layers in circuit board 2, the remaining circuit lands not being shown.

A solution of hot concentrated sulphuric acid is applied to areas 14 and 16 causing these to be etched away. When the sulphuric acid has etched completely through circuit board 2, as shown in C, a water and alkaline rinse neutralizes any further etching of the acid.

Since the acid does not affect the copper conductors, circuit lands 6, 8 and 12 remain in etched-out holes 18 and 20.

As shown in D, pins 22 and 24 can be inserted into holes 18 and 20, respectively, causing the exposed circuit lands to be bent downwardly, thus establishing the desired electrical contacts.
