Abstract

Magnetic disc 25 is permanently mounted within protective casing 24. Hub unit 26, which carries disc 25, extends through one wall of casing 24 and carries friction plate 38 and locating ball 55 on the outside of casing 24. Locating ball 55 ensures precise alignment of friction plate 38 with a second friction plate 53. This is provided with centrallyplaced, frusto-conical recess 54 into which ball 55 fits.

Random Access Magnetic Memory Unit

Magnetic disc 25 is permanently mounted within protective casing 24. Hub unit 26, which carries disc 25, extends through one wall of casing 24 and carries friction plate 38 and locating ball 55 on the outside of casing 24. Locating ball 55 ensures precise alignment of friction plate 38 with a second friction plate 53. This is provided with centrallyplaced, frusto-conical recess 54 into which ball 55 fits.

Friction plate 53 is driven by motor 50 through shaft 51. Disc 25 is rotated by magnetically engaging plates 38 and 53 by energization of clutch unit 52. Spring-loaded trap 44 is provided in casing 24 to permit transducers to enter the casing. When aligned correctly, casing 24 is supported on tracks 16 and 17 which fit into locating grooves 42 and 43.
