Direct Drive System for Magnetic Core Storage

This is a direct drive system for a magnetic core storage device. The drawing shows a cross-section of the drive system for one dimension.

A driver comprising transistors 1, 2, and 3 and a gate comprising transistors 4 and 5 selectively produce half-select drive current through line 11 of magnetic cores to tend to set the cores to one remanent state. The driver comprising transistors 6, 7 and 8 and the gate comprising transistors 9 and 10 selectively produce half-select drive current through line 11 to tend to set the magnetic cores to the other remanent state.

Two separate inputs are provided for the drivers. The first input 12 comprises the timing signals. The second input 13 comprises the addressing portion. Thus, the same diodes can be used to decode the address for both the drivers and the gates.

The constant current drive permits currents with good rise time to be generated from a low supply voltage, resulting in excellent amplitude control independent of supply voltage variations.
