Abstract

By reducing the width of the main jet nozzle of a fluid amplifier, so that the aspect ratio (depth/width) is 1. 75 or greater, deviation of the laminar main jet by the mechanism of laminar attachment is obtained. Laminar attachment characteristics in a tested module having a main jet nozzle depth of.040 inch and a width of.015 inch appear at Reynolds numbers from 500 to 1400. Above Reynolds numbers of 1400 the main jet goes into turbulent attachment.

Through a large portion of the laminar attachment range from Reynolds numbers of 700 to 1 100 the module exhibits tri-stability. When equal control pressure signals are injected simultaneously on both sides of the main jet, the jet separates from a wall and goes directly up the middle. Above a Reynolds number of 700 the element acts as a latch. Whatever wall the jet attaches to after a control signal is applied, the jet remains attached to that wall even after the signal is turned off.

Since the main jet remains laminar while operating, with high attendant recovery pressure, large fan-out ratios are possible. This advantage enables more economical use of amplifiers in logic circuits. High pressure recovery occurs with the jet in each of its stable positions. With laminar jet operation power, requirements are cut by nearly an order of magnitude compared to a similar size turbulent attachment amplifier.
