Abstract

The laser cavity 1 is constructed of a 90 degrees oriented crystalline medium, e. g., ruby, so that its output radiation is linearly polarized. Cavity 2 is constructed of an active medium capable of amplifying the radiation from cavity 1 and is 0 degree oriented so that it has no particular polarization bias.

The laser cavity 1 is constructed of a 90 degrees oriented crystalline medium, e. g., ruby, so that its output radiation is linearly polarized. Cavity 2 is constructed of an active medium capable of amplifying the radiation from cavity 1 and is 0 degree oriented so that it has no particular polarization bias.

A quarter-wave plate is interposed between the cavities so that the radiation entering and leaving the amplifying stage is circularly polarized. The wave plate acts to isolate cavity 1 from cavity 2. Thus, any radiation which reflects back into cavity 1 from cavity 2 is linearly polarized at right angles to the natural output of cavity 1 and, as such, has no effect on the process of stimulated emission occurring in it.
