Abstract

The self-aligning web slitter cuts tape to a precise width from a wider web. Two rotatable knife shafts 10 and 1 support opposite sets of rotary knife blades. The upper blades supported on shaft 10 comprise a plurality of annular flexible disks 13 between spacers 18. Disks 13 respectively support blades 14 which are annular and are supported on disks 13 by a plurality of bolts 15 having nuts 16. A spring 17 is provided about each bolt 15 between disks 13 to bias apart the pair of blades 14.

Self Aligning Slitter Knives

The self-aligning web slitter cuts tape to a precise width from a wider web. Two rotatable knife shafts 10 and 1 support opposite sets of rotary knife blades. The upper blades supported on shaft 10 comprise a plurality of annular flexible disks 13 between spacers 18. Disks 13 respectively support blades 14 which are annular and are supported on disks 13 by a plurality of bolts 15 having nuts 16. A spring 17 is provided about each bolt 15 between disks 13 to bias apart the pair of blades 14.

The bias on blades 14 urges them against blades 11 and 12 on shaft 1. The blades 11 and 12, etc., can be solidly fastened to shaft 1. Thus, as the shafts 10 and 1 rotate, a web received between blades 11 and 12 is sheared by blades 14 to a width equal to the spacing between blades 11 and 12.

Because of the bias springs 17, the blades are self-sharpening and self- aligning. Instead of springs 17, disks 13 can be made of spring material with a bias which urges them apart.
