This mechanism is for rapidly threading a tape into and through feed and guide areas of a tape handling machine.

Hook 1 on the end of leader 2 automatically engages loop 3 on the end of tape 4. Such occurs as soon as a tape reel within cartridge 5, shown in dotted lines, is mounted on hub 6. Leader 2 has slots 7 and 8 which are sensed by wheels 9. The position of wheels 9, either in or out of the slots, determines the condition of contacts 10 and 11. These are part of a control circuit which directs power to a drive sprocket 12 and selects one of two torque levels to be applied to shaft 13.

In its extended position, one end of leader 2 is engaged by the drive sprocket 12 while the central portion is threaded through guiding stations 14, 15 and 16. The hooked end of leader 2 is positively positioned by engagement of arm 17 with slot 18 in the leader, the leader thus being held taut between drive sprocket 12 and arm 17.

When cartridge 5 is mounted on hub 6, arm 17 is removed from slot 18 by rocking arm 17a by the bottom surface of cartridge 5. A low torque T on shaft 13 maintains leader 2 and tape 4 taut.

Once leader 2 and tape 4 are coupled as shown in dotted lines, drive sprocket 12 is permitted to drive leader 2 to the left, the leader drawing tape 4 into the tape handling machine. When roller 9 drops into slot 8, the threading operation is terminated and processing of the tape can begin.
