Abstract

Head 1 is reciprocated transversely of magnetic tape 2 for recording, reading and checking of information bits 3. Head 1 has recording and reading gaps arranged at a 45 degree angle with respect to the normal transverse direction of movement of the head, upper left drawing. Head slide 4 has extension 5 formed in proximity to armature 6 of search magnet 7. Normally, during each cycle of operation and reciprocation of head 1, magnet 7 is energized so that armature 6 is maintained out of the way of extension 5.

Read Record at 45 Degrees

Head 1 is reciprocated transversely of magnetic tape 2 for recording, reading and checking of information bits 3. Head 1 has recording and reading gaps arranged at a 45 degree angle with respect to the normal transverse direction of movement of the head, upper left drawing. Head slide 4 has extension 5 formed in proximity to armature 6 of search magnet 7. Normally, during each cycle of operation and reciprocation of head 1, magnet 7 is energized so that armature 6 is maintained out of the way of extension 5.

Searching in a particular channel of tape 2 at high speeds is performed by moving head 1 out across tape 2 and not energizing magnet 7. On the return sweep of head 1, extension 5 engages armature 6 and head 1 is then maintained in position over a particular channel of the tape for searching. Since bits 3 and the recording and reading gaps on the head are arranged at a 45 degree angle, sensing can be done longitudinally for searching purposes or transversely for reading purposes, as required.
