In a store where members contained in a tray are pneumatically ejected and later returned, acceleration and deceleration in a rapid access environment must be taken into account.

A large aperture covered by a flapper valve is provided at the bottom of each storage position in the tray. Members stored in the tray are accessed by a pneumatic tube system. Air directed up through an aperture lifts the flapper and forces the member from its position in the tray. The large aperture and compliant flapper permit a large volume of air to rapidly eject the member.

When the member is returned to its tray position, the flapper lies over the aperture so that an air cushion is formed between the bottom of the descending member and the tray. The member enters the tray at a high velocity and must be decelerated to prevent damage. Deceleration rate is controlled by selecting an appropriate value of clearance between the member and the walls of the tray that surround it.
