Variable Mode Pushbutton Switch

The switch, illustrated schematically, may be remotely controlled to operate in a selected one of four different modes. Because of this remotely controlled selectivity, it is particularly suited for use in a legislative assembly to register the delegates' votes.

Closure of the contacts within the reed relay ampule 10 registers the vote. These contacts are closed by operation of the pushbutton 11 to slide the magnet 12 within effective attractive distance of the reeds in the ampule. The coil 13 wound around the ampule 10 may be selectively energized with varying strengths and polarities of current to provide the four types of operation.

These include (a) momentary make (no current); (b) latch make (weak current, producing field assisting that of magnet 12); (c) inhibit (weak current producing a field bucking that of magnet 12), and (d) maintenance operation (strong current operating the contacts remotely).
