Adjustable Reactance Resistor

The resistor is used in broad band-pass ladder networks and other applications requiring precision resistors.

The resistor has a plurality of pi sections 10 which comprise wire non- inductively wound on hollow coil form 12. A section 14 of the resistor is inductively wound. A magnetic core 16 is mounted by threaded member 18 for axial movement within the coil form.

Core 16 is adjustable between a position inside the non-inductively wound sections of the resistor, where the core has no effect, to the inside of the inductively wound section of the resistor, where the magnetic core slug is effective for varying the inductive reactance of the resistor. By varying the inductive reactance of the resistor in this manner, the capacitive reactance caused by stray capacitance can be cancelled so that the resistor appears to be a purely resistive element at higher frequencies.
