Reproducing System for Transverse Track Tape Records

The method is for reading information stored on a longitudinal track of magnetic tape. Two read heads 1 and 2 each cover a space twice the width of a recording track and are mounted so that both cover a common track width.

The data recorded on a track includes an address or location indicating portion 5. This is examined to show which of the read heads 1 or 2 is positioned to provide a true reading from that track and not a reading which includes signals derived from an adjacent track.

The width of a track is defined by the width of write head 4. This may or may not be included in the same assembly as the read heads 1 and 2. The read head assembly is mounted for transverse movement across the tape so that any one of a number of parallel tracks can be selected for readout. If the read heads are positioned so that they both give true signals, only one head is selected.
