Column Selector

The subject device is provided for the selection of given card columns by depressing numeral keys using Tens and Units relays for making an electric path through an emitter. The emitter acts in unison with the carriage to stop the carriage when the desired column is reached.

If it is, for example, desired to select column forty-five, the four key is depressed actuating Tens relay T4. At the same time the Second Key Stroke relay is actuated again shifting the Key leads from the Tens relay to the Units relays U1, U2, U4 and U8. These relays control a decoding matrix that selects a path through the contacts of the Tens relay T4.

When the five key is depressed, a circuit is closed through the contacts of the U1 and U4 relays, thus selecting a path through the contact T4-5 of the Tens relay T5 to contact forty-five of the emitter. Simultaneously with the operation of the Units relays, the carriage starts to step. The emitter rotates in step with the carriage travel until contact forty-five is reached actuating a Stop relay opening the circuit for the escapement.
