Bidirectional Non Destructive Readout Device

This thin film cylindrical memory device reads out on either the word or bit line. The device includes cylindrical tube 4, having a magnetic film on its surface, word line 2 about the circumference of tube 4, and common bit-sense line 6.

To non-destructively read out stored information from the device, a steady state bias current is applied to line 2. The bias orients the magnetization vector away from the easy direction to a direction AB between the easy direction and hard direction (lower drawing). By applying a positive signal of limited magnitude to line 2, the magnetization vector is rotated from direction :AB to direction AC and produces a readout pulse on the common bit-sense line of magnitude C'B'. On the other hand, by applying a positive signal of limited magnitude to line 2 when the magnetization vector is in the direction AB, a positive readout pulse is produced on line 2 of magnitude B'A'.
