Abstract

This apparatus permits a typewriter carrier to be decelerated as the carrier is returned to and approaches a starting position. The typewriter carrier 10 which mounts a print element is moved by drive devices. Such action is in the carrier return direction indicated by arrow 11, when the typist depresses a carrier return key. Actuation of the carrier return cycle moves pull-on link 12 so that latch 13 is released. This allows margin rack 14 to be quickly moved to the right by spring 15 acting through bellcrank 16. Mounted on margin rack 14 is a margin stop 17 which is adjustable by the typist and determines the margin position.

As carrier 10 moves in the carrier return direction, it engages margin stop 17 and moves the margin rack assembly in the same direction. The carrier is decelerated by the action of fluid dashpot 20 which is connected to the end of bellcrank 16. The carrier 10 reaches the margin position and the latch 13 re- engages. The deceleration apparatus eliminates bouncing and inaccurate positioning of carrier 10 during high speed carrier return operations while preventing undue loading of the carrier by the deceleration apparatus when operating within the deceleration distance.
