Abstract

The unknown signal, which can relate to a spoken word or a printed character, is introduced in one end of a first quartz rod 10. The known signals enter one end of a second quartz rod 11 which is disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to rod 10.

Recognition System

This is a recognition system capable of comparing an unknown signal with a plurality of known signals to effect a recognition of the unknown signal. The unknown signal, which can relate to a spoken word or a printed character, is introduced in one end of a first quartz rod 10. The known signals enter one end of a second quartz rod 11 which is disposed in spaced parallel relation with respect to rod 10.

The known signals are repetitively supplied from memory device 12 at a rate which is greater than the time it takes an unknown signal to travel the length of rod 10. Disposed on one side of rods 10 and 11 is a line light source 13 while positioned on the opposite side is photocell array 14. Connected to the elements of array 14 is decision or recognition logic 15.

The light from source 13 is modulated by the ultrasonic waves produced in rods 10 and 11. Array 14 detects the correspondence between the known and unknown signals which approximates the correlation function between the signals. The location along array 14 where maximum correlation takes place is detected and logic 15 provides an output indication corresponding to the unknown signal.
