Abstract

This is a tabulating assembly for a typewriter which includes only half of the tabulation stops generally required. This is accomplished with pivoted check levers. These can be positioned to intercept either of two tabulation check projections displaced horizontally and vertically to define character positions.

Compact Tabulating Assembly

This is a tabulating assembly for a typewriter which includes only half of the tabulation stops generally required. This is accomplished with pivoted check levers. These can be positioned to intercept either of two tabulation check projections displaced horizontally and vertically to define character positions.

Tabulation rack 1 carries tabulation stops 2 at every other character position. Rack 1 is mounted on the carriage frame in the conventional manner. Stops 2 are pivotally mounted on rod 3 and formed to be detented in any one of three possible positions by detent spring 4. Stops 2 each have a projecting portion which can be set to either position A or position B or in an inoperative position C.

Tabulation check lever 6 carries two check projections 7 and 8. Projections 7 and 8 are displaced horizontally one character distance. Projections 7 and 8 are displaced vertically to positions in which projection 7 engages a stop 2 only when it is in position B and projection 8 engages a stop 2 only when it is in position A. With this arrangement one stop 2 serves two character positions in accordance with which of two angular positions A or B the stop 2 is located, and also of course, in accordance with the one character space horizontal displacement of the check projections 7 and 8.

The operator of the typewriter need not take special action to move the stops 2 as required by this assembly, since this is effected automatically by the set ...
