Abstract

If a control fluid pressure from source Pc is less than a predetermined critical value, pressure fluid from high pressure source Ps flows via choke 10 to chamber 11 in device A, displacing flexible diaphragm 12 sufficiently to flow past ridge 13 to chamber 14. From 14, pressure fluid flows at a restricted rate via choke 15 to a low pressure outlet or exhaust Ex. It also flows without restriction to control chamber 16 of device B. This action causes flexible diaphragm 17 to seal against ridge 18 and thus prevent flow of pressure fluid from Ps via choke 19 past 18 to an outlet Po.

Diaphragm Type Fluid Step Amplifier

However, if the control pressure from Pc exceeds the critical value, diaphragm 12 seals against 13, blocking flow to 16, which is then vented via 15. Hence, pressure fluid from Ps then flows via 19 and displaces 17 sufficiently to flow past 18 and without restriction to Po, as well as to Ex via choke 20.

Thus, if Ps is 1 p.s.i. and 10 and 15 are of equal now capacity, the pressure in 11 and 14 is 0.5 p.s.i., if Pc is less than 0.5 p.s.i. If Pc exceeds 0.5 p.s.i., 12 seals. Thus, one-half the supply pressure is the critical value. Hence, in the example, any control pressure less than 0.5 p.s.i. is ineffective and provides zero output pressure in Po. When pressure from Pc is at least 0.5 p.s.i., pressure in Po rises to and remains constant at a value proportional to the flow capacity of choke 20 divided by the combined flow capacity of series-arranged cho...
