This display device consists of a wheel R bearing the numerical characters
0... 9 and four special ones. Wheel R has a toothed section omega on the opposite side.

The displacement of wheel R is governed by four pinions 1, 2, 4 and 8 located side by side on a carriage ch which moves from one wheel to another after each display.

These pinions have one, two, four and eight teeth respectively, staggered in such a way as to act cumulatively to obtain fifteen driving cogs giving the involution of pinions 1, 2, 4 and 8. A clutch pawl, such as Al, is fitted on each of these pinions. It is controlled by an electro-magnet EM 1 which engages it on a motor shaft M. A pawl which is integral with the display wheel locks it in the selected position with respect to a fixed grooved shaft Q.

Suppose the digit 5 is to be displayed. The electromagnets which actuate pinions 1, 4 free the corresponding Al pawls, and pinions 1 and 4 engage on shaft M. After each key is depressed, a clutch not shown, allows shaft M to complete one revolution.

The tooth of pinion 1 unlocks positioning pawl R' of the display wheel and shifts it one division forward and re-locks it after its passage. Then, in the same manner, pinion 4 turns the display wheel another four divisions to place digit 5 in the display position. No other pinion acts upon R'.
