Abstract

An eight-sided cylindrical print stick 10 bearing engraved characters strikes ink ribbon 11 and paper 12 against platen 13. Carriage 14 moves stick 10 from left to right parallel to platen 13 to print a line of information. On completion of a line, paper 12 is advanced and stick 10 is returned by carriage 14 to the left margin in preparation for printing a new line.

An eight-sided cylindrical print stick 10 bearing engraved characters strikes ink ribbon 11 and paper 12 against platen 13. Carriage 14 moves stick 10 from left to right parallel to platen 13 to print a line of information. On completion of a line, paper 12 is advanced and stick 10 is returned by carriage 14 to the left margin in preparation for printing a new line.

In order to provide fresh ribbon for each line of print, ribbon 11 is advanced from right to left from endless ribbon spool 15 by carriage 14. As carriage 14 returns to the left margin, clamp 16, pivotally mounted on carriage 14, grips ribbon 11, causing it to unreel from spool 15. Coil spring 17 biases clamp 16 against backup finger 18 with ribbon 11 between them.

When the carriage 14 moves from left to right, the tension on ribbon 11 operates against spring 17 to disengage clamp 16. Such action causes ribbon 11 to slip between clamp 16 and finger 18.
