Abstract

This is a paper sheet feeding system employed in an automatic printer. Individual paper sheets from a stack are fed after separation to a paper sheet stop allowing printing to occur. The sheets are fed subsequently to an output device in which there is provision for sensing the position of the papers being fed to control the feed operation.

Sheet Feeding and Control Device

This is a paper sheet feeding system employed in an automatic printer. Individual paper sheets from a stack are fed after separation to a paper sheet stop allowing printing to occur. The sheets are fed subsequently to an output device in which there is provision for sensing the position of the papers being fed to control the feed operation.

The paper is fed from a loading station by feed roll 1 acting against reverse feed separation roll 2, allowing a single sheet at a time to pass. As the paper sheet travels along guide plates 7, it is caught by feed rolls 8 on shaft 3. The front edge of the paper sheet pushes against two levers 9 which are freely rotating on shaft 3. Levers 9, which are held together by bar 10, control clutch 12. As the paper sheet continues to travel, the leading edge of the paper then turns levers 9 thus disengaging clutch 12 and stopping the rotation of roll 1. As the leading edge hits another pair of levers 9 which freely rotate on shaft 4, an identical operation occurs in which clutch 15 is disengaged, stopping shafts 3, 4 and separation roll 2 which are driven by belt 14.

Stopping of shaft 4 indicates that the paper is in position for printing. After printing, clutch 15 is solenoid engaged, which drives shafts 4 and 3 and separation roll 2. Feed roll 1 feeds as soon as the trailing edge of the printed paper sheet has passed levers 9 on shaft 3 so that they turn back into home position and engage clutch 12....
