Improved Magnetic Tape

Improved adhesion between a flexible substrate and a magnetic thin film coated on it is obtained by utilizing a substrate of a substantially porous or perforate nature.

Porous substrate 2, composed of material such as polyethylene terephthalate, is coated with a thin layer of magnetic material 4 upon a single surface or upon opposed surfaces. Material 4 is also deposited within perforations 6 to provide a strong mechanical key. This increases the adhesion of material 4 to substrate 2.

Where substrate 2 is coated on both sides and interconnected through perforations 6, an exceptionally strong bonding is also obtained.

The desired porous substrate is obtained by controlled manufacture, or by etching, puncturing, controlled air pressure, sandblasting, etc.

The magnetic film can be coated upon the porous substrate by spraying methods, vacuum deposition, vapor deposition, or plating techniques.
