Abstract

In A, light from source 1 passes through polarizer 2 and quarter wave plate 3 to transparent display window 4. Window 4 has a channel 5 formed in it in the configuration of the character desired. Light passes through window 4 and plate 6 and analyzer 7 to the observer.

In A, light from source 1 passes through polarizer 2 and quarter wave plate 3 to transparent display window 4. Window 4 has a channel 5 formed in it in the configuration of the character desired. Light passes through window 4 and plate 6 and analyzer 7 to the observer.

In this arrangement, the light transmission axes of polarizer 2 and analyzer 7 are crossed. The axes of plates 3 and 6 are at 45 Degrees relative to polarizer 2, The birefringent fluid, such as an aqueous solution of Mill Yellow NGS, a dye product of Allied Chemical & Dye Corp., is supplied to channel 5 from a valve and pump, not shown. When flow occurs in the channel, the observer can see the channel configuration in window 4.

In B, display window 8 is provided with a matrix of seven channels 9, each of which is connected through individual valves to the fluid source. Selective control of the valves, in combination, permits the formation and display of different characters in a single window.
