Cord Retraction Mechanism

The mechanism either reels or unreels an electrical cord to different positions. The reel allows a contact element to cycle as many times as necessary before the element is firmly repositioned.

Cord 1 is coiled about reel 3 for storage. Reel 3 is mounted on spindle 5, attached rigidly to the device to which cord 1 is to furnish power. Reel 3 is attached to spring 7 which winds up cord 1 on reel 3.

When cord 1 is pulled outwardly against the spring 7 tension, cam surface 9, rigidly attached to reel 3, rotates clockwise. When reel 3 thus turns, socket 11 on the end of cord 1 disengages from plug 13. Cam 9 ultimately forces lever 15 holding plug 13 to rotate counterclockwise as shown dotted. In this manner, even after reel 3 makes one revolution as a result of further outward movement of cord 1, plug 13 clears the rotating position of socket 11.

When cord 1 is approximately at the desired operating location, tension on 1 is eased. It is then in the hold or lower position shown in solid lines. Cord 1 automatically retracts under the action of spring 7. Member 15 follows cam 9 under the action of spring 17 and positions plug 13 to receive socket 11. Eventually, the dropoff of cam 9 engages the upper edge of member 15 so that the retraction force of spring 7 is transferred through the mating of these two flat surfaces to solid pivot 19, attached to the device frame.
