This device allows shifting of the output of an injection laser from one mode to another, thus varying the frequency of photon energy of the output.

The device is an ordinary Fabry-Perot type laser cavity with a channel etched down the middle. Separate contacts are made to each part of the p-side. The current distribution over the area of the laser can thus be controlled. If the current is distributed equally between the contacts, the threshold current is lower than if it all goes through contact 1 or 2. Furthermore, the frequency of the mode is lower in the first case.
