PbTe Chemical Polish

This relates to a chemical polish for lead telluride which provides surfaces which are indistinguishable from cleaved surfaces.

The polish consists of a solution of saturated K(2)Cr(2)O(7) and concentrated HNO(3). The volume ratio of the two constituents is between 4.2 and 5.0 with an optimum of about 4.5.

A typical solution consists of 20cc of saturated K(2)Cr(2)O(7) and 4.5cc of concentrated HNO(3). To accomplish polishing, lead telluride is placed in the solution and stirred. The surface when smooth is removed from the solution and re-used in distilled water.
