Abstract

This reed relay receives two inputs A and B at the terminals of its two coils and forms a complemented Exclusive Or function, :AB + :AB, at its switch terminals. The two coils are wound to produce individually an mmf that is equal and opposite to the mmf of the permanent magnet.

Exclusive or Reed Relay

This reed relay receives two inputs A and B at the terminals of its two coils and forms a complemented Exclusive Or function, :AB + :AB, at its switch terminals. The two coils are wound to produce individually an mmf that is equal and opposite to the mmf of the permanent magnet.

When both coils are de-energized, :AB, the permanent magnet causes the two contact fingers to close. When either coil is energized,

+ :AB, its mmf about equals the magnet mmf and has the opposite polarity. The mmfs of the coil and the magnet substantially cancel and the contact fingers spring apart to open the circuit. When both coils are energized, :AB, they produce an mmf that is about twice the mmf of the magnet alone and opposes the mmf of the magnet. The net mmf is sufficient to close the contacts. The contacts are insensitive to the polarity of the magnetic field.
