Abstract

Oriented polymeric tubular films, such as polyethylene terephthalate, can be shrunk to size by using a solid mandrel having a trapped thin liquid film between the mandrel and the tubular film. The internal stresses of the tubular film are relieved by heat or solvent action and the tubular film shrinks onto the liquid film covered mandrel.

Tubular Film Shrinking

Oriented polymeric tubular films, such as polyethylene terephthalate, can be shrunk to size by using a solid mandrel having a trapped thin liquid film between the mandrel and the tubular film. The internal stresses of the tubular film are relieved by heat or solvent action and the tubular film shrinks onto the liquid film covered mandrel.

Tubular film 1 is placed around mandrel 2. One end of film 1 is tied closed. A suitable liquid 3 is poured into film 1 until it covers mandrel 2. The thusly prepared film is suspended in oven 4 by a string 5. Film 1 is caused to shrink by means of heat, solvent action or a combination of these. Film 1 is then allowed to cool or dry. The thickness of the liquid film can be controlled by using liquids of different viscosities. For example, S. A. E. motor oil gives a trapped film of about
0. 015 inches and glycerine gives a trapped film of about 0.005 inches.
