Abstract

When magnetic tape reels are stored on edge in storage bins, the labels which are affixed to the flat surface of the reel are obscured. The retractable label shown in the two drawings obviates this difficulty by overlying the reel edge, when the reel is stored. In use, the label is retracted to permit free access to the tape.

Retractable Tape Reel Lag

When magnetic tape reels are stored on edge in storage bins, the labels which are affixed to the flat surface of the reel are obscured. The retractable label shown in the two drawings obviates this difficulty by overlying the reel edge, when the reel is stored. In use, the label is retracted to permit free access to the tape.

In the upper drawing the tag 10 is in its retracted position, in which label portion 10A rests against the side of reel flange 1 1. Tag 10 is prevented from flying outwardly by centrifugal force by tab 10B. This is formed from web 10C by a square U-shaped cut. Web 10C flexes to permit the label portion to clear flange
11. Tag 10 is carried in H-shaped slide 12 affixed to the tape reel.

For storage, the tag is slid radially inward until tab 10B clears crossbar 12A of slide 12. The tab is then depressed beneath crossbar 12A. The tag is slid radially outward until label portion 10A clears flange 11 and springs downward to occupy the interspace between the two flanges as shown in the lower drawing. Turned- up end 10D on the label prevents it from sliding free of slide 12. Label portion 10A is roughened to receive the identification, the whole of the label being made of plastic.
