Variable Increment Drive

A spring clutch can be cam-controlled to vary the amount of motion transmitted from the clutch input to the output. A spring clutch can be cam- controlled to vary the amount of motion transmitted from the clutch input to the output.

Coiled spring 1 is wrapped on rotatable shaft 2 with end 3 inserted in reciprocating drive rod 4. Opposite end 5 of spring 1 is inserted in hub 6 which is rotatably mounted on shaft 2. Hub tab 7 is urged against arm 8 of bellcrank 9 by spring-biased pin 10 in fixed support 11. Arm 12 of bellcrank 9 rides in contact with take-up spool 13 fixed on shaft 2 and on which web 14 is being wound.

Drive rod 4 reciprocates within fixed limits and tightens spring 1 about shaft 2 on the downward stroke. Spring 1 grips and moves shaft 2, turning spool 13 to partially wind web 14. During the upward stroke of arm 4 spring 1 unwinds, and shaft 2 is held by friction shoe 15. As the spool 13 diameter increases, bellcrank 9 is rotated counterclockwise on its pivot by arm 12 and arm 8 moves hub 6 clockwise against pin 10. This partially unwinds spring 1 so that more of the fixed downward stroke of drive rod 4 is required to tighten spring 1 before shaft 2 moves. Substantially uniform increments of displacement are thus provided at the periphery of spool 13.
