Abstract

In systems for processing documents provided with magnetizable characters, it may be necessary to read the documents several times. Such reading occurs at different points in the system although the complete information is needed only once while at other points only parts of that information are required.

Method of Processing Documents

In systems for processing documents provided with magnetizable characters, it may be necessary to read the documents several times. Such reading occurs at different points in the system although the complete information is needed only once while at other points only parts of that information are required.

In this method, the documents are read only once in reading machine A by a magnetic head 1. The document contents are then entered into computer D for storing and processing the data and establishing a simple identifying symbol for the individual documents. That symbol is recorded through magnetic head 2 by de-magnetizing the print of part of the information recorded in predetermined areas of the individual documents.

After having been conveyed through feeding device C, which may contain a great number of documents, the recorded identifying symbols are scanned by reading device 3. By comparison with the information stored in computer D, it is possible to detect the data required for further processing, e.g., for directing the documents into one of the pockets 4...9 of sorter B.
