Magnetic Tape Backspace Device

This device advances or backspaces a magnetic tape a predetermined distance without the need for reversing the drive capstan.

The tape drive includes tape supply reel 1, first tape loop control device 2, magnetic read-write head 3, drive capstan 4 that can advance the tape toward second tape loop control device 5 and takeup reel 6. Inverted Y-member 7 is mounted for pivotal motion about shaft 8. Rollers 9 are placed on the ends of the two arms of Y-member 7 to contact the tape. The base of Y-member 7 serves as an armature mounted between two selectively energized electromagnets 10 and
11.

Energization of electromagnet 10 provides a forward movement of the tape across head 3. Energization of electromagnet 11 provides a backspacing movement of the tape across head 3. The distance the tape is displaced across head 3 due to magnet actuation is determined by the armature displacement and the ratio of the base-to-arm lengths of Y-member 7.
